Hot Topics - Symptom Management and Sudden Cardiac Death Risk Assessment in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Steve R. Ommen, M.D., director, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic at Mayo Clinic, discusses management of symptoms in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, as well as assessment of risk for sudden cardiac death. He reviews treatment options for managing symptoms of effort-related shortness of breath, chest pain, or presyncope.

If medical management is not successful, more invasive options including catheter-based septal ablation or surgical myectomy may be considered to manage symptoms.  Dr. Ommen emphasizes the importance of surgical treatment performed in centers experienced with large volume of cases for best patient outcomes.  He emphasizes the importance of patient participation in shared decision making when considering of risk factors for implantable device implantation.
