Chapters Transcript Bariatric Recovery Clinic Physicians discuss the bariatric recovery clinic, including minimally invasive, same-day repair procedures to manage obesity. obesity is a lifelong relentless disease. The approach we've taken in our clinic is to treat those patients as someone who needs help. Someone who needs a tool to help them in that lifelong battle against obesity rates of bariatric surgery are rising across the country and unfortunately there are complications that can come up after a bariatric surgery. And so Mayo clinic Created the bariatric recovery clinic to help patients who are having issues. We really like our approach to procedures because we're able to operate through the mouth. A patient can come for their procedure and go home the same day because we don't have any incisions tools to allow us to do procedures inside the stomach. But through someone's mouth have grown rapidly over the past 10 and 15 years. And so we've got stents we have endoscopic suturing and other tack and suture devices which allow us to repair and remodel damaged stomach pouch or small intestine. I categorize complications after bariatric surgery into really three main categories. If things are too tight, we will work to try and open them up and that may be a stent. It may be a dilation type procedure. It may be an alternative endoscopic bypass type procedure. The second type of issue that can come up after bariatric surgery is things are too loose. We have endoscopic options whereby through the mouth we can actually tighten the pouch or the stomach sleeve and help that patient lose weight to get back to feeling like they did right after their original bariatric surgery. And then the third issue. They can come up in in some circumstances is more serious and that's a leak and leakage from a bariatric surgery is usually more urgent. But we're here to help with that as well. We have very extensive drainage procedures again, all done through the mouth to help patients avoid another very risky surgery. The hometown physician, a primary care doctor or gastro neurologist who has really gotten to the end of their experience and expertise with helping a difficult patient can refer the patient here. We can really hone in and focus on the issues that are at play for that patient. And then once that issue is resolved, we can refer them back to their hometown care. What I love about my specialty is that patients love this procedure. It really means a lot to them to have had a procedure minimally invasive, no symptoms home the same day. That makes such a big impact on their fight against obesity.
